While the north I am referring to is the English north, it is also describable for my current whereabouts as I am in Norway for our annual summer holiday.
Today marks one month until my solo exhibition in London opens, 'å på K' the 16th of September. But first, the north.

Medan det spesifikke 'nord' eg siktar til her er det engelske nord, er det også beskrivande for min noverande opphaldsstad då eg i skrivande stund er i Noreg for vår årlege sommarferie.
I dag er det ein månad til separatutstillinga min i London opnar, 'å på K' den 16. september. Men først, 'the north'.

The weeks since the previous post have been spent moving from London, the news this time is that we now live in Whitley Bay, on the coast east of Newcastle.

Vekene sidan førre innlegg har gått med til flytting frå London, så nyheten denne gong er at me no bur i Whitley Bay, heilt på kysten aust for Newcastle.
Activities
Not so much creative work perhaps, but the last time has been spent packing, moving, organizing the upcoming solo exhibition I will have at the YWCA home in London and refurbishing 'number 10'. The latter is relatively creative work, to the extent that interior is such. We renovate with a focus on preservation. If there is something we can take care of in the house, we do not throw it out, but rather upgrade it if it is not entirely to our liking. Fortunately, much is to our taste, and it was precisely the style that I fell for when I was on display at the end of April. The house has been in the same family for over 50 years, and the 'father of the house' has done a fantastic job with a complete and thorough 70s style. Where others might have wanted to tear out much of the inventory, I am very happy that no one has done so. You have to respect good craftsmanship when you see it.

Ikkje så mykje kreativt arbeid kanskje, men den siste tida har gått med til pakking, flytting, organisering av den komande separatutstillinga eg skal ha på KFUK-hjemmet i London og oppussing av 'nummer 10'. Sistnemnde er relativt kreativt arbeid, i den grad interiør er sådan. Me pussar opp med fokus på bevaring. Dersom det er noko me kan ta vare på i huset, kastar me det ikkje ut, men oppgraderar det heller dersom det ikkje er heilt etter vår smak. Mykje er heldigvis etter vår smak, og det var nettop stilen me falt for då me var på visning i slutten av april. Huset har vore i same familie i over 50 år, og ‘far i huset’ har gjort eit fantastisk arbeid med ein gjennomgåande 70-tals stil. Der andre kanskje ville ha rive ut mykje av inventaret, er me veldig glade for at ingen har gjort det. Ein må respektera godt handverk når ein ser det.

This time I have several recommendations, but they are all linked to our 'number 10'. One of my favourite TV programs is 'The Architect's Home' on NRK (available online). In the last season, Charlotte Thiis-Evensen discusses the topic of preservation, which I found very inspiring and educational. The second recommendation is a film I have wanted to see for a while. On our last evening in north London, we watched the film 'the Duke' with the story taken from Newcastle. Jim Broadbent plays the main character Kempton Bunton who in 1961 stole a painting from the National Gallery in London. The story is true and also paints a good picture of the working class in everything from interiors to rebellion (against the national broadcaster BBC). A very nice, warm film and a rather funny story. The last recommendation is the photo exhibition 'The last ships' by photographer Chris Killip which I saw at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle. He lived among - and documented the lives of - the workers when shipbuilding in Newcastle had its heyday in the 60s. I remember one of his most famous photos from a lecture at Gray's School of Art, when I was first introduced to the term 'the North'. The term is more than a direction and may be associated with themes such as working class and industry, but also recessions, strikes and closures of – not only the local industry – consequently also local communities. There is a lot of history in the red brick walls from the end of the 19th century that we now live in, and I am looking forward to revealing the layers and finding out more.

Eit av mine favoritt TV-program er ‘Arkitektens hjem’ på NRK (tilgjengeleg i nett-tv). I den siste sesongen tar Charlotte Thiis-Evensen opp temaet bevaring, som eg fann veldig inspirerande og lærerikt. Den andre anbefalinga er ein film eg har hatt lyst til å sjå lenge. Siste kvelden vår i nord-London såg me filmen ‘the Duke’ med handling frå nettop Newcastle. Jim Broadbent spelar hovudpersonen Kempton Bunton som i 1961 stal eit måleri frå National Gallery i London. Historia er sann og målar også eit godt bilete av arbeidarklassen i alt frå interiør til opprør (mot rikskringkastar BBC). Ein veldig fin, varm film og ei ganske morosam historie. Den siste anbefalinga er ein fotoutstilling eg såg på Laing Art Gallery i Newcastle, med fotograf Chris Killip. Han budde blant – og dokumenterte livet til – verkstedsarbeiderane då skipsbygginga i Newcastle hadde si storhetstid på 60-talet. Eg hugsar eit av hans mest kjende foto frå ein forelesning på Gray’s School of Art, då eg første gong vart introdusert for begrepet ‘the North’. Begrepet beskriv meir enn berre ein geografisk rretning og kan bli assosiert med tema som arbeidarklassen og industri, men også nedgangstider, streikar og nedleggingar av – ikkje berre lokal industri – følgeleg også lokalsamfunn. Det er mykje historie i dei raude murveggane frå slutten av 1800-talet som me bur i no, og eg gler meg til å lagvis finna ut meir.
