ég er þetta hús
– an end of residency exhibition by Norwegian artist Åse Vikse.
The exhibition will feature some of the works that Vikse has developed during her month-long residency with ArtsIceland. The works have been created in her studio in Aðalstræti 22 and around Ísafjörður with the project title ‘mapping Ísa’.
In this project Vikse has explored the act of returning to a place and the notion of the constant as well as the changing. This is Vikse’s sixth return to the Westfjords and it has coincided with the 30th anniversary of her first encounter with this majestic and powerful landscape. Her sister’s family in the neighbouring Súðavík is the reason why she has visited the area in different phases of her life. From a teenager’s curious and innocent view on a breathtaking landscape, reflected in photos of untamed horses and steep mountains ridges, through family ties woven together, to an artist returning to create, observe and realise that everything and everyone inevitably changes, and that our perception of the constant may be inconcrete.
During Vikse’s residency she has wandered, observed, encountered, retraced, experimented and created. She has come across stories of Guggan, Falur and Slunkaríki which are referenced in her artwork, woven together with the people, the houses, the constantly drifting and the still standing.
Sjáumst!
